Help restore a piece of wing history

GOWEN FIELD, Boise, Idaho --  The Idaho Military History Museum's latest addition brings an important piece of the 124th Fighter Wing's History - and a need for volunteers along with it.

Located at the Idaho Military History Museum just west of Gowen Field, the F-86A Sabre Jet  hasn't flown over Idaho skies in nearly a half century. But with help from volunteers, it will be an enduring symbol of aviation and military history.

Bill Miller, former Idaho Air Guard pilot and Ken Swanson, IMHM director, are seeking at least a dozen volunteers to help with things like polishing the fuselage, attaching access panels and restoring exterior markings. According to Miller, crew chief experience is desired, but not necessary.

"Anyone who wants to help us restore this beauty is welcome to," said Miller.

The restoration effort will take place during work days and weekends, though people may volunteer during the evenings if arrangements are made in advance.
