Now is the time to give the gift of life - give blood

GOWEN FIELD, Boise, Idaho -- Did you know that in the United States alone, every two to three seconds, someone needs a blood transfusion and 95% of all Americans will need a blood transfusion sometime in their life?

Did you that there are some people who need blood transfusions to live? In fact, blood is needed for people who have cancer, blood disorders, sickle cell anemia, and other illnesses, along with those involved in accidents and emergencies.

The need for blood is on-going. Every day, people depend on blood donations just to live another day. Before anyone can receive blood, there is a time-consuming process that donated blood has to go through. Once it has gone through this process, it has to be used almost quickly. If not, after 42 days, the blood will become unusable and unsafe for use.
Soon having enough blood in reserve becomes a challenge. Should a disaster occur, the need for blood increases and supply decrease. The only way to meet demand is to have regular donations from healthy volunteers.

Giving blood isn't just for the recipients. By donating blood, you are making a difference in someone's life and in your community by helping others. You can be assured that you are making a great contribution by ensuring that adequate supplies of blood are available to those in your community.

Why kind of difference are you making? For the five million people who received blood transfusions every year, you donation can make the difference between life and death.

For us in the military, the American Red Cross has created a strong operations network that helps us direct your blood donation to the areas of the country -- or the world -- where they are most needed. While you can't direct your donation to be specifically routed to military personnel, you can be sure that it will be sent to the areas of most critical need.
